Post-Birthday Post

July 28, 2011

Yesterday was my mom’s birthday.  I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a day that’s all about them 🙂  Although something tells me she didn’t let it be all about her, considering she agreed to work on a few clients (she’s a massage therapist!) on her own birthday!  <—- proof of her selflessness.

 Do we look alike?

She passed on the freckles, but certainly not the tan complexion.

Thanks a lot, Mom.

She requested that we have breakfast at Chautauqua Park in Boulder and it couldn’t have been a more beautiful morning for eating breakfast out on the patio right next to the mountains.

Fact: Chautauqua is such a difficult word to spell.  I pride myself on knowing how to do it.

Fact: I’m totally smitten with Boulder in the summer 🙂

After I sat at the table by myself for 20 minutes (read: my family has the inability to be on time for ANYTHING), we ordered and the birthday girl opened her presents while we waited for our food.

I’m totally distracted right now by the faces my sister is making.

IMG_2138

And the fact that she’s filing her nails in this picture.

Because who doesn’t like giving away pictures of themselves as presents?

In addition to my narcissistic gift (just kidding, I swear she asked for that picture), my sister, Joey (who was there in spirit), and I also got her tickets to the Shakespeare Festival.  Romeo and Juliet, here we come!

And because this is a food blog after all…

IMG_2142

Boulder Omelet, home fries, whole wheat toast.

IMG_2143

Goat cheese!

I sometimes find veggie omelets to be a bit bland but thanks to the goat cheese I’m guessing, this one was pretty flavorful.

Fact: You go to the Chautauqua Dining Hall for the patio seating and gorgeous scenery, more than you go for the food.

I made the mistake of telling the waiter it was my mom’s birthday and he brought out cake.  At 10 AM.

IMG_2145

Flourless chocolate cake with what I assume was whipped cream and a raspberry jam of sorts.

IMG_2144

IMG_2151

Awwww.”

And no visit to Chautauqua is complete without a stroll through the grounds.

IMG_2154

IMG_2156

Itty bitty strawberries, anyone?

IMG_2157

Of course my dad has to play with the water spout on this rock. <—– what a boy!

IMG_2158

Coolest street name ever?

IMG_2159

And then I went home and made this fluorescent pesto.

IMG_2163

But that’s neither here nor there.

Here’s to hoping my mom enjoyed her birthday as much as I did! 🙂

What did you do for your last birthday?

Do you have a park like this in your hometown?  There’s also a concert hall at Chautauqua and my parents once saw a bear there!

WIAW & Happy Birthday, Mom!

July 27, 2011

First order of business.

A very Happy Birthday to my mom.

IMG_0954

Thanks for all your love, support and cooking tips, Mom.  I love you!

And since it’s a birthday and all, it would make sense that today is also a party day.

Peas and Crayons

Breakfast:

IMG_2102

IMG_2105

Oatmeal, chia seeds, Cascadian Farms Dark Chocolate Cherry granola, choco chips! and peanut butter.

Oh and maybe a splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream.

IMG_2108

Mellllty.

I was chilly all day yesterday.  Hot oats were in order.

L-l-l-lunch:

Most unappealing picture of a sandwich ever.

IMG_2112

Roasted red pepper hummus, pickle, mustard, tempeh and sprout samich.

IMG_2113

And I was clearly too hungry to even bother taking a good picture, hence the background being my comforter.

Errand-running treat:

IMG_2114

Iced grande soy two-pump chai.

I know, you almost thought I went a Tuesday without Starbeez didn’t you?

Snack #1:

IMG_2116

Almonds and banana chips.

I eat my almonds dry roasted and un-salted, which is weird considering how much I like my salt.

Joey came home a little before 6 and wanted to go look at paint colors for our new place (plus I needed to make a stop at the grocery for almond milk and wrapping paper!).  We couldn’t decide if we wanted to eat dinner early and run errands later or vice versa.  We opted for a late dinner so snack #2 was extremely necessary.

IMG_2117

Food Should Taste Good Sweet Potato chips + more roasted red pepper hummus.

Just for fun:

IMG_2118

I snapped the quickest picture possible of this lady walking her cat before she noticed.  Who does that?!

Dinner:

IMG_2120

IMG_2124

Lots of roasted patty pan squash.

IMG_2121

And the award for most adorable produce goes to!…

Also:

IMG_2128

Eggplant Parm.

Which would have been much easier to make had our grill had any propane.  Oh well, I just used our grill pan.  It was POURING last night anyways so it wasn’t exactly ideal grilling conditions.

 IMG_2129

Sauteed kale + roasted patty pan.

IMG_2131

Major plus: lots of leftovers!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to breakfast and to deliver a birthday present 🙂

Have you ever had patty pan squash?

How do you like you almonds?  Raw?  Roasted?  Butterized?

Favorite snack? Anything involving hummus and/or almonds is fine by me.

Deja Vu

July 26, 2011

I could lie and say this will be some kind of coherent post, and I could pretend I have some sort of “deja vu” theme to tie everything together, but let’s be honest.  This will most certainly turn into another one of those “more odds than ends” posts that are becoming more and more frequent around here.

Maybe I should consider a blog name change.

You know that whole “learn from your mistakes” saying?  I seem to have a hard time with that one.  Case in point, this post from last year where I talked about doing too many lunges and being uber sore the next day while having to complete a training run.

image

And then I went and did it again yesterday/today.

Actually, I totally blame Troy for making us hold crescent lunge forever what felt like forever yesterday in my hot power fusion yoga class.

Crescent lunge, you are the bane of my yoga existence.

And can I also say I don’t think I’ve ever sweated so much in my life.  Joey asked me if I’d peed my pants when he went to put my workout shorts in the wash.

Also, no matter how many times I wake up kicking myself for not going to bed earlier and promising I will next time, I still don’t listen.  I was up with the sun (okay, that makes it sound like I was running at 4 AM, it was really only 6!) to run and felt so groggy.  I thought the actual run was relatively painless, at least.  One lesson I have learned is to get my workout done early.  I never know how the rest of the day is going to pan out or if spontaneous plans (or heat!) will arise so I always think it’s best to get it out of the way early.  And now I’m bored and wish I had something to take up some time, go figure.

And while we’re on the topic of repeated events, I just signed up for the Skirt Chaser again.  Let’s hope I don’t feel like I’m dying of a heat stroke like last time.  It’s a different course so please please let it be less up-hilly.

untitled

The whole idea is that females get a 3-minute headstart on the males.  Joey is free to sign up should he chose, but I hope he’s prepared to eat my dust.

More repeats: I’m making eggplant parm again tonight, a la Kath.  I’ve used this recipe once before (around this exact time last year, in fact!) and don’t know why I haven’t made it since.

Last year’s picture: I think some improved photography and better lighting is in order.

And speaking of pictures, I plan on getting through this entire post without using a single recent picture or even many pictures that I actually took.  Sound good?

And why should I even try to make chia seeds look picture-worthy when someone else can do it for me?  Thanks, Google!

I finally broke down and purchased a 3-lb. bag of chia seeds.  Not because I buy into any of the health benefits of chia seeds (whatever they claim to be) or because I think they make me feel like a hundred bucks, but because they give a texture to overnight oats that ground flax just can’t.  So to heck with you, flax.

I had to forewarn Joey that 3 pounds of chia seeds were coming his way at work (I didn’t want to risk shipping them here, since we’re moving at the end of the week).  Oh and to keep an eye out for this important delivery as well.

Peas and Thank You: Simple Meatless Meals the Whole Family Will Love

I’m not sure whether I’m more excited about the recipes or the humor that will certainly come along with them.

Fact: I almost wrote a text about my dinner “recipea” the other day.  I spend too much time on that blog.

I’m off to do some last minute preparations for my mom’s birthday tomorrow 🙂

Happy Tuesday!
