WIAW: The Picky Eater

June 22, 2011

May I preface this post by saying I’ve never been a picky eater.

Just ask my mom.  Or any friends whose parents loved when I’d come over and eat anything they’d make.  Or any flight attendant/cafeteria lunch server.  Okay, you get the point.

While I’d say I’m still not that picky, I’m definitely a lot pickier than I used to be.  I like to think my tastes are just more refined nowadays.  I really noticed how much pickier I’ve gotten yesterday when I was preparing ahead of time for WIAW.

Here’s to being punctual… and picky!

Peas and Crayons

Breakfast:

Guys, I love chia seeds for the sole reason that they hold my overnight oats together, but I do not love their price.  I do however have an excess of flax seeds on my hands so I decided to try using ground flax instead of chias.

IMG_1585

Not quite as thick and that nutty taste certainly is different but I think I’ll stick to flax and hope it grows on me.  So long chias!  My bank account will thank me.

Overnight oats topped with coffee cake, tropical granola and peanut buttah.

I attempted to go to my usual free yoga class and realized after I arrived that they’d changed the schedule.  It wasn’t free, it wasn’t Core Power 1, and it wasn’t all that great.

Am I the only one who feeds of the energy of a full room of yogis?  4 people isn’t quite as fun.

Came home and grabbed something to cool me down.

Iced coffee with toffee nut, white mocha and breva (aka half and half) – we call it a Jason Black – please don’t go to Starbucks and try to order a JB, they won’t know what you’re talking about.

Then I got a relaxing 75-minute facial.  I know, my life is really hard what with all the massages, facials and pedicures I’ve been getting.  I’ve just come to realize I’m worth some extra pampering.

I was famished after my facial so I refueled myself with a Larabar and refueled my car with some gas.  Does anyone else feel slightly anxious every time the fuel light comes on?  Maybe it’s because I ran out on the highway once…

Cherry Pie Larabar.

IMG_1595

I made it through half of this bar before remembering I hate Larabars.  Except any of the flavors that involve mini chocolate chips – those are totally acceptable to my taste buds.

Bleh!

Came home and assembled some lunch, featuring the “Caesar Hummus” I made yesterday.

Spinach, celery, carrots, cherry tomato and hummus salad.

Food Should Taste Good Multigrain Chips on the side.

IMG_1615

Sadly I could not finish the spinach because like I said yesterday, it just left a bad taste in my mouth 😦

Or I’m just picky.  Either way, unsatisfying lunch = early afternoon snacking.

Crunchy Vanilla Sunrise, almonds, granola, almond milk.

Dinner plans were scraped when I decided to go support my dad and attend a talk he was giving.  Fast and easy was on the menu instead.

Chipotle: Vegetarian tacos with black beans, fajita veggies, corn salsa, green salsa.

Not a fan of how drippy the green salsa is <— read: picky.

Guacamole stolen from my sister’s chicken bowl.

Did I mention I managed to forget both my camera and my phone at home?  Thank goodness for Joey’s iPhone!

I ate 2 out of 3 and saved the last one for later.

One talk and one embarrassingly bad softball game later, I came home for a snack.

Please excuse the bad light.

Banana, crumb cake, raisins and peanut butter sauce (aka pb mixed with almond milk and cinnamon).

Now please go thank our hostess and join the party!

Are you a picky eater?

Guilty

June 21, 2011

Well, well, well, Happy First Day of Summer to you all.  Mother Nature opted to observe the holiday by putting an end to the rain and gloom of yesterday and giving us some cheery sunshine today.

Now that it’s officially summer, let’s keep the sun a shinin’ okay?

It’s come to my attention today that I’ve been guilty of several things.  I thoughT I’d fess up and share.  Because if you can’t be honest in the blogosphere, where can you?

Yesterday I ventured to the store to pick up some groceries that included a few ingredients I needed to make Jess’s “Caesar Hummus.”  And then I proceeded to buy already-made hummus.

Yes, I’m guilty of buying hummus, even though I have the ingredients to make it on hand, because, well, I was hungry for hummus right then.

IMG_1575

You can never have enough hummus though, right?

IMG_1573

Don’t worry, I ended up making the Caesar hummus today and can I just say best hummus ever?

IMG_1602

IMG_1604

Gah, so good.  But really, how could it not be when it involves capers?

IMG_1608

I’m also guilty of buying canned pumpkin even though I know we’re well out of pumpkin season.  I had some stored in the freezer but someone decided to toss it when they cleaned out the freezer during the move.

IMG_1574

You’ve been warned, Joey.  Don’t mess with my pumpkin ever again.

And seeing as it’s the First Day of Summer and all, I should probably confess that I’m guilty of listening to Atmosphere’s “Sunshine” multiple times a day.

IMG_1592

I can’t help it, it’s just such a feel good summer song.

And while we’re on the topic of Youtube videos, I’m totally guilty of watching this video at least three times today.  I blame Caitlin.

Please take three and a half minutes out of your day to watch is.  But only so you’ll understand when I say things like “Nothing can stop the honey badger when it’s hungry” in reference to myself.

And nothing can stop the honey badger when she sees “Rockstar Spinach” for sale at the Farmers’ Market.  The leaves are the size of my hand.

No really, they are.

IMG_1610

And call me crazy, but I’m guilty of preferring regular old bagged and imported from God knows where spinach from the grocery, because this stuff was bitter and hard to eat.  And not just because I couldn’t even fit an entire leaf in my mouth but because it was way too crisp.

It left a bad taste in my mouth.  Literally and figuratively.

Luckily I had some Food Should Taste Good chips to wash it down with.  Joey and I are both guilty of buying a bag yesterday.  And both from Target, oddly enough.

IMG_1611

Living together has made us transform into the same person.  Except that I hate beer and South Park and don’t eat at Taco Bell.  And Joey refuses to eat breakfast.  Okay, we’re not the same at all, but I’m glad we’re in agreement on the fact that these chips are good.

We aren’t so in agreement about keeping the kitchen floor clean.  Which is why I’m guilty of leaving notes like this for him and our roommate, Claire.

IMG_1617

And apparently I was in a cleaning mood because not only did I clean the kitchen floor, but I also vacuumed the living/dining room and folded laundry.

I’m guilty of owning the same exact running shirt in two colors.  I can’t help it, I love it.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

IMG_1618

And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to enjoy the rest of this sunny day.

What are you guilty of?  Come on now, fess up.

Or you can just quote the honey badger video to me and you’ll officially be my favorite person of the day.

This or That?

June 20, 2011

Normally Monday would be a run day – sandwiched between rest day Sunday and yoga day Tuesday – but, it looked like this outside.

image

Rain rain, go away.  Come again some other day.

So I did this instead.

Milk/banana-less hot oats.  Please send me to the grocery store.

IMG_1558

IMG_1560

How I’ve missed tea.

IMG_1569

Especially this kind.

IMG_1562

With these kinds of messages.

IMG_1568

Really resisting the urge to draw in a coma after “By listening.”

And instead of dragging my butt to the gym to run on the dreaded treadmill dreadmill, I did this.

Looking over Father’s Day pictures of my new baby niece, Belle Sohpia 🙂

Proud Daddy.  Love you, brother!

IMG_1554

So instead of forcing myself to do something I don’t want to, I think I’ll do this.

Looks like I need to go buy some dirt.

image

And probably some of this.

I know your jealous of my polka dot pajamas.

IMG_1571

Or lots of this.

IMG_1572

I’m not advocating that always put exercise off for another day, I’m just advocating that you do what makes you happy and remember you can always run later 🙂

Do you give yourself a break when you just don’t really feel like exercising or do you just grin a bear it?
