WIAW: At the Zoo

September 28, 2011

May I preface this WIAW post by saying I hate really dislike the zoo.  I always have.

If you’ve seen one monkey, haven’t you seen them all?

And how many times do I really need to see a lion in my life?

Seals are a totally different story — you can never see too many seals.

The seals weren’t out yesterday.

But despite all that, and the fact that zoo animals are even more boring than I remembered, I still had fun taking my nephew there yesterday.  If only, because the way he dragged me on the miniature train with him and burst into wailing tears the minute the ride started was hilarious.  Yes, I find others’ pain amusing, are you surprised?

And this is what I ate Wednesday… at the zoo.

Peas and Crayons

Pre-run:

Because running comes before everything these days, literally and figuratively.

Un-pictured half a banana and peanut butter. <— Do I sense a recurring theme here?

4 miles later…

Breakfast:

IMG_2990 Hot banana-whipped oats.

Topped with microwaved apples, maple almond butter, granola and peach-rhubarb jam.

If you’ve never mixed apple slices, nut butter and milk and tossed it all into the microwave, you’re in for a delicious surprise.

Snack:

IMG_2993  Nut cluster.

I don’t know where my mom got these, but they tasted like toffee, they were delicious and I ate 3.

Lunch:

IMG_2996 PB & J.

Packed for me by my mom.  She’s perfect.

Camera cord photo bomb… again.

IMG_3004 Grapes on the side.

x5.

A few hours of monkey-watching, train-riding (see above), and giraffe-gawking (seriously, I never want to see what those two giraffes were doing together ever again…) later, we had a traffic-y ride home with my nephew telling me he was going to “hurt me” the entire way.

Needless to say, I needed a drink hummus.  What, a long day at the zoo doesn’t make you crave oven-roasted carrots and hummus?

Snack:

If the face you’re making in reply right now is anything like Joey’s was, then I’ll assume that’s a no.

Whatever.

IMG_3011

For the record, the hummus recipe from the Peas and Thank You cookbook is the best hummus I’ve ever tasted.

Dinner:

We made tacos!  Let’s forget I ever said I didn’t like tacos, shall we?  I seem to eat them a lot.

These tacos to be exact.

IMG_3017 Grilled portobello and poblano tacos with pico de gallo.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever had to re-plate leftovers because the sun was down by the time you ate dinner.

I’m raising my hand.

And I’m not happy about it.

IMG_3015

Shot glasses for our accompanying tequila.

Or because they hold tacos up nicely.

IMG_3016

Too lazy to put avocado or cheese on just for the picture, but those two ingredients were included last night, plus some black beans on the side.

Dessert/bedtime snack:

Served in bed, naturally.

IMG_2951 Pumpkin spice steamer.

IMG_2917Zucchini bread.

I have maybe 2 slices of bread left from this loaf and I’m worried about what I’ll eat before bed when it’s gone!

And in case you haven’t heard enough complaining from me today, when I walked into the kitchen to do the dishes, I stepped in a puddle…

And then we saw this.

IMG_3012

Now it looks like this.

IMG_3013

I’m not sure if that’s much better, but Joey has this need to try to fix things himself.

Luckily, maintenance is on its way!

As always, thanks to Jenn of Peas and Crayons for hosting our WIAW par-tay.

Survey Day

September 27, 2011

It might be because I’m in a hurry <— story of my life.

Or because I write best in short, bullet-pointed statements, but today seems like as good a day as any for a little survey, doesn’t it?

I stole this from Chelsey — Thanks, Chelsey! 😀

Things I Learned This Weekend

September 26, 2011

11 miles is only one mile longer than 10, but sometimes it feels like five.

Not our best run, but Joey got his 21 miles (holy moly!!) in and I got my 11 and we’ve officially completed our longest training runs, yay!

Sunflower butter isn’t as good as everyone makes it out to be.

IMG_2970

But man is it drippy!

IMG_2964

Eggs are most definitely a lunch food.

IMG_2966

Nothing beats happy hour at The Med.

Nothing.

If you forget to bring your camera to half the places you go this weekend, it will probably make for a boring post come Monday.

Sorry.

If you order mac and cheese and chocolate milk at Noodles and Co. the employee ringing you up will stare and you like you’re six.

I can’t help what my body is craving after 11 long miles.

Packing a healthy lunch can be fun.

IMG_2973

Especially when it involves chili, FSTG chips, carrots and kombucha.

IMG_2975

Silken tofu can taste like a really decadent cream sauce on pasta.

Minus the guilt.

And artery clogging.

If you eat dinner at your normal time, but stay out with your co-workers 2 hours past when you’re normally asleep, you will wake up feeling like you haven’t eaten in days.

IMG_2980

And you’ll need fluffy banana pumpkin pancakes ASAP.

IMG_2982

If you don’t tend to your Google Reader all weekend, you will have a lot of catching up to do.

Off to do just that.  Plus some stretching, lifting and working.

Happy Monday!
