WIAW: At the Zoo

September 28, 2011

May I preface this WIAW post by saying I hate really dislike the zoo.  I always have.

If you’ve seen one monkey, haven’t you seen them all?

And how many times do I really need to see a lion in my life?

Seals are a totally different story — you can never see too many seals.

The seals weren’t out yesterday.

But despite all that, and the fact that zoo animals are even more boring than I remembered, I still had fun taking my nephew there yesterday.  If only, because the way he dragged me on the miniature train with him and burst into wailing tears the minute the ride started was hilarious.  Yes, I find others’ pain amusing, are you surprised?

And this is what I ate Wednesday… at the zoo.

Peas and Crayons

Pre-run:

Because running comes before everything these days, literally and figuratively.

Un-pictured half a banana and peanut butter. <— Do I sense a recurring theme here?

4 miles later…

Breakfast:

IMG_2990 Hot banana-whipped oats.

Topped with microwaved apples, maple almond butter, granola and peach-rhubarb jam.

If you’ve never mixed apple slices, nut butter and milk and tossed it all into the microwave, you’re in for a delicious surprise.

Snack:

IMG_2993  Nut cluster.

I don’t know where my mom got these, but they tasted like toffee, they were delicious and I ate 3.

Lunch:

IMG_2996 PB & J.

Packed for me by my mom.  She’s perfect.

Camera cord photo bomb… again.

IMG_3004 Grapes on the side.

x5.

A few hours of monkey-watching, train-riding (see above), and giraffe-gawking (seriously, I never want to see what those two giraffes were doing together ever again…) later, we had a traffic-y ride home with my nephew telling me he was going to “hurt me” the entire way.

Needless to say, I needed a drink hummus.  What, a long day at the zoo doesn’t make you crave oven-roasted carrots and hummus?

Snack:

If the face you’re making in reply right now is anything like Joey’s was, then I’ll assume that’s a no.

Whatever.

IMG_3011

For the record, the hummus recipe from the Peas and Thank You cookbook is the best hummus I’ve ever tasted.

Dinner:

We made tacos!  Let’s forget I ever said I didn’t like tacos, shall we?  I seem to eat them a lot.

These tacos to be exact.

IMG_3017 Grilled portobello and poblano tacos with pico de gallo.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever had to re-plate leftovers because the sun was down by the time you ate dinner.

I’m raising my hand.

And I’m not happy about it.

IMG_3015

Shot glasses for our accompanying tequila.

Or because they hold tacos up nicely.

IMG_3016

Too lazy to put avocado or cheese on just for the picture, but those two ingredients were included last night, plus some black beans on the side.

Dessert/bedtime snack:

Served in bed, naturally.

IMG_2951 Pumpkin spice steamer.

IMG_2917Zucchini bread.

I have maybe 2 slices of bread left from this loaf and I’m worried about what I’ll eat before bed when it’s gone!

And in case you haven’t heard enough complaining from me today, when I walked into the kitchen to do the dishes, I stepped in a puddle…

And then we saw this.

IMG_3012

Now it looks like this.

IMG_3013

I’m not sure if that’s much better, but Joey has this need to try to fix things himself.

Luckily, maintenance is on its way!

As always, thanks to Jenn of Peas and Crayons for hosting our WIAW par-tay.

Are you a fan of the zoo?  What’s your favorite animal?

Best thing you ate today (or yesterday)?

Any complaining you’d like to do? 😛

I kind of feel the same way about the zoo. Oh and the animals are never really “out”, whatever that means, when we go to the zoo. Plus I hate seeing the poor dears anyway.

Your eats are fab as usual, love that hummus recipe as well 🙂

I think I overdid the garlic on the hummus, but oh well 😛

So many animals weren’t “out,” when we went too. Where are they then?!

  2. September 28, 2011 12:31 PM

I Love the zoo! Especially the tigers/lions and bears (oh my!)

I pretty much love any animal with fur 😉

  3. September 28, 2011 1:22 PM

The apple mixture is definitely going on my list of things to try! I’ve actually never been to the zoo so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing? Or not missing?

    • September 29, 2011 8:17 PM

You’re not missing anything. Except maybe seals.
I learned that apple trick last year and it’s a life changer 🙂

Time to move into another apartment again? 🙂 Another move anytime soon and you really deserve to do some complaining! Nice looking eats Lauren.

I love aquariums way more than zoos…I think I only go to zoos for the petting zoo part 😀 I like patting sheep on the head! Umm, why have I never thought of roasted carrots with hummus? Plain ol’ carrot sticks and hummus bore me, but ROASTED? Yeaaah, gotta buy some carrots and try this now.

    • September 29, 2011 8:16 PM

I just like seahorses. I swear we have a petting zoo, but I couldn’t find it! I always try to eat raw carrot sticks and hummus and my mouth gets bored of chewing after about half a carrot. Raw carrots are really just a vehicle for hummus, otherwise they suck.

Roasted carrots with hummus! That sounds delicious.

    • September 29, 2011 8:14 PM

      1. Everything is delicious with hummus.
      2. Roasted carrots are by far the best way to eat carrots!

This post made me laugh! They should get the poor giraffes a room. The last time I was at the zoo I saw more elephant parts than necessary, but besides that I get way more excited for the zoo than you.

    • September 29, 2011 8:13 PM

Thank god our zoo only has female elephants! Seriously, it was like a car crash — I was mortified, but I couldn’t look away.

  8. September 28, 2011 3:49 PM

Ugh that water leak thing happened at my parents condo… what a pain!

    • September 29, 2011 8:06 PM

You’re telling me! This giant fan is SO loud and I just keep thinking “who’s going to pay my electric bill??”

  9. September 28, 2011 3:58 PM

I’m not a fan of the zoo, but my kids love it there. We go once a year during the summer, more than enough if you ask me!

  10. September 28, 2011 4:22 PM

Bahaha, your nephew sounds like a little bit of a handful! I only like seeing pandas at zoos 🙂

My hand is definitely raised too in terms of taking pictures of leftovers the next day for the natural light. Why doesn’t the sun realize we’re not ready for it to go down? It’s so inconsiderate.

    • September 29, 2011 8:04 PM

Gah, we don’t have pandas at our zoo 😦 I’ve been to the San Diego zoo a few times and I think they have pandas but they’ve never been out when we’ve been there.

      Totally agree about the sun!

  11. September 28, 2011 5:42 PM

I am not a fan of the zoo either! Great eats though! Happy WIAW 🙂

  12. September 28, 2011 6:03 PM

Gingie and I actually went to the zoo this past weekend and I was over it after like, a minute. I just like the monkeys 🙂

  13. September 28, 2011 7:06 PM

I am totally intrigued by the peach-rhubarb jam… Where did you get it?

  14. September 28, 2011 9:36 PM

Ok, I am going absolutely CRAZY over your oatmeal this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your oatmeal looks amazing!! Seriously beautiful photography. You captured the yumminess coming from it.

  16. September 29, 2011 6:41 PM

I think you’re hysterical. I read your “Who’s Who” page and I’m very jealous about both of your parents being massage therapists! lol and I had to re plate leftovers tonight when I got home late after class! Hate it haha

  17. October 1, 2011 8:57 AM

Not a huge fan of the zoo…I actually can’t even remember the time I actually went to one…well, unless you count the time I went to the Alligator Farm last summer on my vacation in Florida. They had a lot of exotic reptiles and birds…it was pretty cool, but it was hot as freakin hell that day! Blah!

Totally raising my hand…although I may have you beat…I’ve actually made the same meal for breakfast the next morning just so I could take a pic in the daylight! It’s a good thing I’m such a big fan of breakfast for dinner, huh? Haha!

I wish I could get my hands on some rhubarb so I could make that jam!

Best thing I ate yesterday…whole wheat bread + Biscoff spread + fig butter = HOLY FREAKIN YUM!!
