How to Throw a Stress-Free Dinner Party

August 20, 2011

Step 1: Prep your salad ahead of time.

IMG_2410 I knew I needed that giant salad bowl.

Make sure to throw in anything and everything that needs to be used up.  This includes carrots from the 5 lb bag you bought last week for no reason, the other half of the bell pepper that cost $2 (for one pepper, really?), the tiniest of basil leaves (because that’s all that’s left on your plant), and grilled corn, because you clearly have a corn grilling addiction.

Step 2: Incessantly take pictures of said salad while you impatiently wait for your happy hour date to show up.

I’m looking at you, Jenn.

Step 3: Slice up anything that needs to be sliced.

Tomatoes and fresh mozzarella?  Check and check.

Step 3: Drink white sangria at The Med’s happy hour.

Buy pre-made pizza dough from Whole Foods.

Leave it to your boyfriend to finish the pizza.

Give yourself time to pre-bake pizza dough, then thank yourself for cutting tomatoes and mozzarella beforehand because all you have to do now is layer it on.

Step 4: Remember to put the basil on after you cook the pizza.  This is key!

Step 5: Envision yourself accidentally dropping the pizza over the side of the balcony and hold on to the pan extra tight.

Step 6: Clean up while pizza cooks so all that’s left to do is layer some basil.

IMG_2424 Holy melty marghertia goodness.

IMG_2426 Step 7: And this is important.

Don’t even worry about dessert and escort your guests to Smart Cow instead.  They’ll think it’s delicious and you won’t have to clean up afterwards.

IMG_2427One of these is not like the others.

I’m talking about the giant 1 lb. cup.

But I guess you could consider my candy-free spoon-less one to be the odd cup out.

First dinner party in the new apartment: accomplished.

Awesome, congrats on your first dinner party in the new place! Pizza is definitely a good choice! And going out for dessert is a good call, too. I always ended up stressing myself out doubly when I make dessert along with everything else!

I totally spaced out dessert and felt bad for not making any but turns out froyo is better anyways.

That looks like a lot of fun! I love having dinner parties – I haven’t had one in a while!

I’ve never actually thrown a dinner party, but I see my mom running around like a stressed out mess whenever she’s hosting one, and I can’t say that I envy her lol. That being said, I’d love to host a party one of these days, especially when I have a place to call my own, but I have no idea what I’d serve. The idea of taking people out for dessert sounds like a good one, though. Who doesn’t love froyo? Especially when it comes in a 1 lb. cup 😉

Ha ha my mom is totally the same way. And my sister and I usually end up finishing most of the tasks because she’ll start something and then get caught up in conversation and forget about the pancakes on the stove.

Yay for dinner parties 🙂 I haven’t had one of those in a long time…. maybe I need to change that!

Awesome dinner party! Makes me throw one now! Totally jealous! 🙂

Awesome! I love margherita pizza! If I was throwing a dinner party, I’d definitely opt for something easy like pizza or a one pot meal like a casserole, enchiladas, or chili…there’s nothing like trying to cook a main dish, sides, AND dessert…nothing like it as in I hosted Thanksgiving dinner last year and will probably never do it again! Haha!

Love the “Envision yourself accidentally dropping the pizza over the side of the balcony”…that’s totally how I think!

i love dinner parties! they’re my favorite excuse to stay in, but have the company of amazing friends and eat good food. at my last one we also had pizza, but i told each guest to bring their favorite topping, which they put on as soon as they got there. we cooked the pizzas while eating apps and catching up over wine! glad to hear yours was a success 🙂
